 HISTORY OF hip

Heightened Independence & Progress (hip)

hip has administered two premier Centers for Independent Living (CIL) in New Jersey for many years – since 1980 in Bergen County and in Hudson County since 1987.  Through the years, programs and initiatives have continued to expand.  In some situations identical services are provided, while in other instances programs are specific to each CIL, which may have County eligibility criteria.

Governed and staffed by people with disabilities, hip offers wide-ranging programs and services for people with disabilities, including:

  • peer support
  • advocacy
  • care management
  • programs that provide funding for disability-related equipment
  • home modifications that remove architectural barriers
  • support coordination and transition services that enable high school students and young adults to prepare for their future
  • print transcribed into Braille by Multimedia Transcription Service (MTS), with a special focus on producing textbooks for students across the country to help them be on the same ‘page’ as their sighted peers

Support coordination that transition services enabled high school students and young adults to prepare for their future, and Multimedia Transcription Service transcribes print into Braille, with a special focus on producing textbooks to enable students across the country to be on the same ‘page’ as their sighted peers.
